Trimming the stem ends
We all want our flowers to last as long as possible. Here are a few tips to help your bouquet or arrangement last a few more days.
Firstly, it's great practice to condition our flowers before arranging. Buy flowers in season and they stay fresh.
With a pair of sharp scissors or a knife, cut the stem ends on a diagonal taking off at least 1 to 2 cm. This allow new vessels to "soak" up water into the stems. Place immediately into fresh water. For best results, do this on a daily basis and keep your flowers out of draughts, direct sunlight and heated areas.
Remember even if you have received an arrangement in floral foam, the container will need to be watered daily. Some arrangements can drink from 1 to 2 cups of water a day! Never water the flower itself (unless it is an orchid). Why? Water breeds bacteria and this will shorten the life of the flower.
So the next time you buy or receive flowers, try these tips and hopefully you can enjoy your gift that much longer.
